According to the recently released 2021 Auto Care Factbook, the Auto Care Association and its research partner, IMR Inc., found that replacement rates for timing chain and timing belt components are rising.

Replacement rates reflect the percent of vehicles that had a relevant part replaced or service performed during the year. Vehicle age has a significant impact on the rate at which different components are replaced, especially related to timing system components. Newer vehicles typically do not experience component failure to the same extent as older vehicles, while vehicles in an intermediate age range often require much more maintenance and repair as their mileage increases. Vehicles in the oldest group also need work, but owners tend to avoid non-essential repairs and therefore rates decline.

In 2019, IMR and the Auto Care Association reported that timing chain replacement rates increased to .56% compared to the 2018 findings of .35%. Similar increases are also found on timing belts as 2019 rates are 1.65% while 2018 came in at 1.26%.

Maintaining a focused, consistent, and professional training program allows for timing drive suppliers such as Cloyes to increase professional technician awareness of the complete timing system. As cam drives have evolved from gear-to-gear, to chain and sprockets, to complete timing drive systems, engines have become much more complex and difficult to repair. Timing system replacement is typically performed due to the detection of unstable operation. In that situation, and even in preventative maintenance situations, stress is experienced by all the timing system components. For these reasons, and the fact that timing component cost is a fraction of the labor costs required to replace the components, it is recommended to replace all components when making the repair.
