Similar to timing belt water pump kits, which have been successfully sold and installed in the automotive aftermarket, timing chain water pump kits are necessary as the shift to OE chain-driven timing drives increases. Timing chains and timing chain components should always be replaced at the same time as the water pump to reduce warranties, customer comebacks, and preserve long-term system performance. Water pump replacement rates are nearly eight times higher than timing chain replacement rates, according to the Auto Care Association.

“The ideal time to replace the water pump is while repairing the timing drive system. Since removal of timing components is required to replace the water pump, it is logical to replace the water pump at the same time,” said Jason Thompson, vice president of engineering and product development for Cloyes. “Replacing the water pump with all timing drive components removed makes for a much more stable install.”

With focus on increased coverage and continued service to its customers, Cloyes has added timing chain water pump kits to its growing timing system product line.

The first two timing chain water pump kits from Cloyes are part number 9-4201SWP for General Motors (GM) 2.0-liter and 2.2-liter engines and part number 9-4201SAWP for the GM 2.4-liter Ecotec engines. These two parts cover nearly 4 million vehicles in operation in North America.

“These kits provide the perfect freshen-up on Ecotec engines,” added Thompson. “If you or your customers own a higher mileage Ecotec with some of the typical symptoms of rattle or water pump failure, this kit will put the vehicle back on the road for a long time.”

Many of the chain-drive water pump applications are transverse mounted, so be prepared to work in a small space. This work is also achievable by unbolting the motor mounts – making the engine free to move up/down and working through the fender well. Remember, to ensure a proper install, follow the appropriate installation steps, make sure the system is in time, and torque all bolts to specification.
